about

Another of the Covid lockdown songs by John and Toni Baumgartner of Speed the Plough. Built on the chord structure of The Doors' Riders on the Storm.

As March became April and then May, we realized this project would remain long distance for quite a while. So, of course, we went right to the comfort zone of our tried and true collaborators over the years. Primary among them were Brenda Sauter and Richard Barnes, former STP members, and one half of the great band Wild Carnation. Brenda’s bass and vocals and Rich’s psychedelic guitar, crafted in their PA studio just fit like your favorite old sweater.

Setting the rhythmic theme for the song are the contributions from our former drummer and current beat master Ian Francia, who assembled a wonderfully textured bed of percussion in his studio in Florida.

lyrics

Open Door (written by John Baumgartner)

Say a prayer for the people going underground
Say a prayer for all the lives in the lost and found
Say a prayer for all the times you said a prayer
Say a prayer until we all come up for air

Ch-
There will be a day
when we meet again
The stars will burn away
I’ll see you then

Shed a tear for the people all around you
Shed a tear for those you don’t even know
Shed a tear just because you can cry
You can have it all without even trying
