about
A song written about 5 years ago and demoed previously, it took on a new life under lockdown. It was one of the songs that began with Toni (vocals, clarinets) and John (keyboard) alone, when group recording was no longer possible. Then, like everything else, it sat.
It moved to a new level with the addition of Michael’s slide guitar parts during his weekly visits, which brought the perfect sense of longing to the proceedings.
That led to a “wish list” idea for a rhythm section to provide a foundation for everything, reaching out to early STP member Stan Demeski (Feelies, Luna, et al) on drums and Scott Anthony (Rebecca Turner, Fond Farewells, Storybook Sound) on bass. We think it was an inspired mashup.
lyrics
Verse 1:
The coffee’s on, the day’s begun, the train has left, you’re all alone,
What happens next?
The bird has flown, you’re on your own, you close the door, and still there’s more,
What happens next?
Chorus:
It must be summer cause the love’s all burned away
and romance dies on the vine.
This can’t be love because it feels so good today
I’ll take a rhyme that isn’t mine.
Verse 2:
You ask yourself, a question once, inside your room, tell the truth,
What happens next?
Fit me in your prayers tonight, throw the lock, turn out the lights,
What happens next?

Me and my friend used to go on drives all the time, and a lot of the time i asked what he was playing, and a majority of the songs were from Yo La Tengo. And since i went and listened to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out i was fan. Never thought i’d buy one of their records for myself. violetstain

Ghost’s Michio Kurihara is a Japanese guitarist whose spectral tone and majestic Ebow I can spot clouds away; among their many credits together, his work on 2000’s Damon & Naomi with Ghost is truly special. That magic remains, as Kurihara teases lustrous textures out of Damon & Naomi’s gently brushed and hushed songs. https://www.vikingschoice.org/archive/vikings-choice-guide-to-bandcamp-friday-aug-2021/ Lars Gotrich
